Premier League

After 6 games each

Coventry City ended a 25-year wait on Monday night. A 4–1 win over Newcastle United, the first home Premier League victory for Coventry in 25 years, lifted them out of the bottom three to 14th, with Jack Rudoni's early penalty, Sidiki Cherif, and substitutes Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni on the scoresheet. Sven Botman's 70th-minute strike was Newcastle's only reply.

That Monday game was the last of the round, so every club has now played six. Manchester City are top with a perfect 18 points, Arsenal are second on 15 and Brighton third on 13. Newcastle drop to 11th on 8.

At the bottom, Fulham are last on 2, with Tottenham and AFC Bournemouth both on 3. The table is unchanged this morning, with no games since Monday 12 October. The next round starts Saturday 17 October with Everton v Chelsea at 12:30, and Bournemouth host Sunderland on Sunday at 2 pm.

  • Leaders: Manchester City 18, Arsenal 15, Brighton & Hove Albion 13
  • Coventry City 4–1 Newcastle United, Mon 12 Oct (first home PL win in 25 years)
  • AFC Bournemouth: 18th, 3 points
  • Table as of Mon 12 Oct 2026, 21:52 UK

The Premier League is England's top division, with 20 clubs. Each plays every other club twice, home and away, for 38 matches. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 and a defeat 0. Ties in points are split by goal difference, then goals scored.

The bottom three clubs are relegated to the Championship, and three clubs promoted from there take their place. This promotion and relegation system runs through all of English football, down through League One, League Two and the non-league levels.

The top finishers qualify for European competition the following season, so the table matters at the top as well as the bottom. The season runs from August to May.

Ligue 1

After 6 games (9–11 Oct round)

Monaco lead France's top flight with 14 points after six games, one ahead of Lille and Rennes on 13. Paris Saint-Germain are sixth on 11 after a 3–1 win over Le Mans on Saturday 10 October, with Beraldo's penalty, Kvaratskhelia and Akliouche scoring.

Elsewhere in that round Lens beat Lyon 2–1, Lille won 1–0 at home to Le Havre, Monaco drew 2–2 with Toulouse, Rennes beat Auxerre 4–1 and Marseille won 2–0 at Troyes. Le Havre are bottom with 2 points.

No Ligue 1 games have been played since, as the week belonged to Europe. Matchday 7 begins on Friday 16 October with Le Mans v Toulouse, and PSG visit Strasbourg on Saturday 17 October.

  • Leaders: Monaco 14, Lille 13, Rennes 13
  • PSG: 6th, 11 points
  • Matchday 7 starts Fri 16 Oct, 20:45

If you're new to this

Ligue 1 is France's top division, with 18 clubs playing 34 matches each. Scoring works like England: 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw.

The champion and runners-up reach the Champions League. Clubs in the bottom places face relegation or a play-off against clubs from Ligue 2.

Money is the main story. PSG's budget has dwarfed the others since Qatar's investment in 2011, which is why other clubs such as Monaco, Lille, Marseille and Lyon are watched as challengers.

Champions League: matchday 2

13–14 Oct

Paris Saint-Germain won at Manchester City 4–2 on Wednesday night, a jolt for the Premier League leaders after their perfect start at home. Arsenal had no such trouble on Tuesday, beating Lille 3–0 at the Emirates with goals from Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka, and sit level at the top of the league phase with Barcelona and Sporting.

Liverpool won a ten-goal thriller 6–3 at LASK, and Aston Villa thrashed Fenerbahçe 6–0 at home. Manchester United lost 2–0 at Atlético Madrid, while Lille, beaten by Real Betis on matchday one, still have no points.

Elsewhere Real Madrid won 4–3 at Roma, Bayern drew 3–3 at Viking and Inter lost 4–3 at home to Club Brugge. Matchday 3 follows on 20 and 21 October.

  • Arsenal 3–0 Lille (Tue 13 Oct)
  • Manchester City 2–4 Paris Saint-Germain (Wed 14 Oct)
  • LASK 3–6 Liverpool; Aston Villa 6–0 Fenerbahçe; Atlético Madrid 2–0 Manchester United

If you're new to this

The Champions League is Europe's top club competition. Since the 2024-25 season it has used a "league phase": 36 clubs sit in one big table, but each plays only eight different opponents, four at home and four away.

The top 8 in the table go straight to the round of 16. Teams in places 9 to 24 play a two-legged play-off for the remaining places. The bottom 12 are knocked out.

Below it are the Europa League and the Conference League, which use the same format, and clubs dropping out of the Champions League can fall into them. Finals are played in late May.

Europa League: matchday 2 tonight

Thu 15 Oct

Bournemouth's European night arrives. AFC Bournemouth host Sturm Graz at the Vitality Stadium at 8pm tonight, after a 2–1 win at Real Sociedad on matchday one, though Alex Scott (thigh) is expected to miss several weeks and Eli Junior Kroupi, Justin Kluivert, Julian Araujo, Veljko Milosavljevic and Amine Adli are also out.

Crystal Palace, who beat Lech Poznań 4–0 on matchday one, are at Lyon at 5.45pm, Sunderland travel to Torreense at 5.45pm, and Marseille and Rennes are at home to Olympiakos and OFI at 8pm. Times are as listed by footballwebpages, believed to be UK time.

The Europa League is Europe's second-tier club competition and uses the same league-phase format as the Champions League: one big table, eight games per club against different opponents.

Clubs finishing high in the table skip straight to the round of 16, those in the middle play a two-legged play-off, and the rest go out. English clubs qualify through league position or by winning a domestic cup.

Lower leagues and the cups

Championship, 13–14 Oct

Swansea City edged Millwall 1–0 on Tuesday to stay top of the Championship on 23 points, two clear of Middlesbrough, who won 3–2 at Stoke City. West Ham United thrashed Lincoln City 6–0 on Wednesday to go third on 19, with the best goal difference in the division (+17).

Cardiff beat Watford 5–1, Birmingham won 4–0 against Preston North End, who stay bottom with 4 points, and Wolves lost 3–1 at home to Bolton. I could not confirm League One, League Two or cup draws today.

English football has a deep pyramid. The EFL runs the Championship, League One and League Two, with 24 clubs each, and below that sits the National League.

The FA Cup is open to the whole pyramid, from the Premier League to semi-professional clubs, which produces upsets. The EFL's own knockout is the Carabao Cup, which starts in August.

In France, the Coupe de France is also open to amateur clubs, and small teams routinely meet professional ones in early rounds.
