The Premier League is England's top division, with 20 clubs. Each plays every other club twice, home and away, for 38 matches. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 and a defeat 0. Ties in points are split by goal difference, then goals scored.
The bottom three clubs are relegated to the Championship, and three clubs promoted from there take their place. This promotion and relegation system runs through all of English football, down through League One, League Two and the non-league levels.
The top finishers qualify for European competition the following season, so the table matters at the top as well as the bottom. The season runs from August to May.

Ligue 1 is France's top division, with 18 clubs playing 34 matches each. Scoring works like England: 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw.
The champion and runners-up reach the Champions League. Clubs in the bottom places face relegation or a play-off against clubs from Ligue 2.
Money is the main story. PSG's budget has dwarfed the others since Qatar's investment in 2011, which is why other clubs such as Monaco, Lille, Marseille and Lyon are watched as challengers.

The Champions League is Europe's top club competition. Since the 2024-25 season it has used a "league phase": 36 clubs sit in one big table, but each plays only eight different opponents, four at home and four away.
The top 8 in the table go straight to the round of 16. Teams in places 9 to 24 play a two-legged play-off for the remaining places. The bottom 12 are knocked out.
Below it are the Europa League and the Conference League, which use the same format, and clubs dropping out of the Champions League can fall into them. Finals are played in late May.

The Europa League is Europe's second-tier club competition and uses the same league-phase format as the Champions League: one big table, eight games per club against different opponents.
Clubs finishing high in the table skip straight to the round of 16, those in the middle play a two-legged play-off, and the rest go out. English clubs qualify through league position or by winning a domestic cup.

English football has a deep pyramid. The EFL runs the Championship, League One and League Two, with 24 clubs each, and below that sits the National League.
The FA Cup is open to the whole pyramid, from the Premier League to semi-professional clubs, which produces upsets. The EFL's own knockout is the Carabao Cup, which starts in August.
In France, the Coupe de France is also open to amateur clubs, and small teams routinely meet professional ones in early rounds.
