Field hockey is played on a pitch by two teams of 11. Players use a curved stick with a flat face on one side and can only hit the ball with that flat side. Goals count only if the ball is struck from inside the shooting circle.
A match has four 15-minute quarters. Tied knockout games go to a shootout in which a player runs in from the 23-metre line and has eight seconds to score.
The Asian Games is a multi-sport event held every four years where the best Asian nations compete. Winning gold in hockey earns an automatic place at the next Olympics, which is why India's wins matter beyond the medals.
The World Cup is held every four years, and the Pro League is a long home-and-away league played between the top national teams.
