The NHL has 32 teams and an 82-game season. Six skaters and a goalie play at a time, over three 20-minute periods. Substitutions happen on the fly, so lines of players rotate every minute or so.
A record is written wins–losses–overtime losses. A win is 2 points. A regulation loss is 0. A loss in overtime or a shootout earns 1 point, which is why the third number matters.
Sixteen teams make the Stanley Cup playoffs, four rounds of best-of-seven. The Leafs are one of the Original Six teams and play in the Atlantic Division. The general manager builds the roster and the coach runs the games.
