Singapore GP done; US GP next

Max Verstappen has won in Singapore from pole, and the title race did not flinch. The Red Bull driver took a lights-to-flag victory at Marina Bay on Sunday 11 October, ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, after also winning the sprint earlier in the weekend.

Antonelli's third place stretches his championship lead to 102 points: 340 against team-mate George Russell's 238, who finished ninth. Lewis Hamilton is third on 229, Verstappen fourth on 221. Mercedes lead the constructors' on 578 from Ferrari (444) and McLaren (339).

The United States Grand Prix in Austin on 23 to 25 October could crown Antonelli: he needs to win, with Russell ninth or lower and Hamilton fifth or lower, to clinch on win count-back. If not, the title would go to Mexico City.

  • Singapore GP (11 Oct): 1 Verstappen, 2 Leclerc, 3 Antonelli
  • Drivers: Antonelli 340, Russell 238, Hamilton 229
  • Constructors: Mercedes 578, Ferrari 444, McLaren 339
  • Next: US GP, Austin, 23 to 25 Oct

If you're new to this

Formula 1 is a world championship for single-seater racing cars. Each season has around two dozen race weekends across the world, called Grands Prix. Ten teams used to compete, and the 2026 grid has 11, with Audi and Cadillac among the newer names.

Drivers score points in each race: 25 for a win, then 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 for places two to ten. Some weekends also include a shorter sprint race with a smaller points scale. Points add up across the season, and the driver with the most is world champion.

A separate constructors' championship adds up both of a team's drivers' points. Teams care about it because the prize money depends on it.

The sport changed its rules for 2026, with new engines and chassis regulations, which is one reason the order at the front looks different from recent years.
