Tennis: the Shanghai Masters

Semi-finals · final Sun 18 Oct

Alexander Zverev is one win from the Shanghai final. The top seed beat Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday 15 October, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina advanced when Arthur Gea retired trailing 4-1. On Friday 16 October Rafael Jodar became, at 20, the youngest semi-finalist in Shanghai Masters history, coming back to beat Casper Ruud 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, his fourth straight Masters 1000 match won after losing the first set. Daniil Medvedev beat Tommy Paul 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

The semi-finals are Zverev v Davidovich Fokina and Medvedev v Jodar; the final is on Sunday 18 October. Earlier in the week Zverev was reported (by Spanish media) to be set to finish 2026 as world number one after Carlos Alcaraz lost to Zizou Bergs, with Jannik Sinner reported out until 2027; the rankings below are dated 5 October and were not re-checked.

  • Zverev beat Alexander Bublik 7–6(6), 4–6, 7–6(1) in the last 16 (Tue 13 Oct)
  • Alcaraz lost to Zizou Bergs 7–5, 7–6(4) (Mon 12 Oct)
  • ATP points: Sinner 11,000, Zverev 9,720, Alcaraz 5,560 (as of 12 Oct)

The men's tour has four levels. The four Grand Slams (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open) are on top, followed by nine Masters 1000 events including Shanghai, then smaller tournaments.

A match is played in sets, and a set in games. Within a game, points go 15, 30, 40, then game, and at 40-40 (deuce) a player must win two points in a row. Most tour matches are the best of three sets, and Slams are the best of five for men.

Rankings are based on points won over the previous 52 weeks, so injuries hurt twice: a missed event means missed points and a falling ranking.

Semi-finals Sat 17 Oct

Aryna Sabalenka is out in her first match. The top seed lost 3–6, 6–4, 7–6(5) to American Ann Li on Wednesday after saving nine match points from 2–5 down in the decider, and Li took her tenth chance after 2 hours 27 minutes. Second seed Jessica Pegula also fell, 2–6, 7–6(7), 6–3 to Jelena Ostapenko.

Iga Swiatek (7th seed) won 6–2, 6–1 over Magdalena Frech and plays Ashlyn Krueger next. Karolina Muchova saved her tournament in two tiebreaks against Caty McNally, and world No 170 Sonay Kartal upset ninth seed Belinda Bencic 6–0, 7–5.

Elena Rybakina, the world No 1, and defending champion Coco Gauff pulled out before the draw, as did Anisimova, Keys and Osaka according to a 9 October entry-list report.

The quarter-finals on Friday 16 October set up a historic last four: Iga Swiatek (7) beat Ann Li 6-4, 6-1, Maja Chwalinska (16) beat Maria Sakkari 6-0, 3-6, 7-5, Sonay Kartal beat Elina Svitolina 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 and Jelena Ostapenko beat Diana Shnaider 7-6(6), 6-1. Swiatek v Chwalinska is the first all-Polish WTA semi-final in the Open Era, between former junior doubles partners. Kartal, ranked 170 after about six months out with a back injury, plays Ostapenko. Semi-finals are Saturday 17 October; the final is Sunday 18 October.

Wuhan is one of the WTA's 1000-level events, the tour's second-biggest tier after the four Grand Slams. The champion gets 1,000 ranking points.

Rankings count the best results from the last 52 weeks, so a first-round exit costs a seed her chance to add points, while the 1000 events in Asia come at the end of the season as players chase a place at the WTA Finals.
